From Empty Suit to Authentic Life
Burnout coaching for professionals navigating stress, disconnection and life transition
When success stops making sense
There comes a point in many professional lives, often in mid-life, when achievement no longer brings meaning.
You may have done everything that was expected of you:
- Built a respected career
- Carried responsibility reliably
- Become known as capable, steady, and dependable
And yet, something feels absent.
What once motivated you now drains you.
What once felt purposeful now feels hollow.
The role continues, but you feel increasingly removed from the person living it.
Somehow you lost your joie de vivre.
This is what I call The Empty Suit Experience.
It is what happens when a professional life continues to function on the outside, but the person inside it feels increasingly disconnected.
It is not a failure or a lack of resilience. it is often the result of years of responsibility, expectation and self-suppression.
You feel disconnected. You're struggling to cope.
Perhaps you sense you are approaching burnout
Many professionals come to this work believing they are simply burnt out.
But burnout is rarely just about workload.
It is often the cumulative effect of:
- Long-term emotional suppression
- Early conditioning around responsibility and approval
- Perfectionism and people-pleasing
- Living in constant “shoulds” and “ought tos” rather than inner consent
- A nervous system that has been in survival mode for years
Over time, this creates fragmentation:
- A highly competent professional self
- And a neglected inner self carrying fear, exhaustion, or emptiness
Empty Suit Coaching addresses this at the root, not the surface.
My story - from senior leader burnout to trauma-informed coach
Decades of perfectionism, emotional suppression and chronic stress led to burnout that nearly cost me my life in 2007/08.
Through my own long journey of self-care, therapy, coaching and trauma-informed work, I learned to understand the deeper patterns that had shaped my life, and how to unwind them safely.
Today, I work with professionals who recognise themselves in that story and are ready to live with greater honesty, vitality and self-respect.
Signs you may be living behind an Empty Suit
You may recognise yourself in some of the following:
- You feel respected at work but disconnected from yourself
- You experience chronic stress, anxiety or exhaustion that rest no longer resolves
- You struggle with imposter syndrome despite clear competence
- You over-function, over-think, or over-care…. and feel resentful or depleted
- You feel emotionally flat, numb or simply detached
- You sense that continuing as you are is no longer sustainable
If so, this is not a personal weakness.
It is often the cost of a life lived in adaptation rather than alignment.
What Empty Suit coaching is (and is not)
This is not performance coaching or therapy as usual
Empty Suit Coaching is:
- Trauma-informed, without being clinical
- Somatic, recognising the body as central to change
- Space, for emotional release and renewal
- Relational, grounded in safety and trust
- Paced, respecting your nervous system and readiness
It is not:
- Productivity or performance coaching
- Advice-giving or motivational pressure
- Crisis intervention, psychiatric or psychotherapeutic treatment
This work supports deep re-alignment, not quick fixes.
Why work with me?
Lived understanding, not abstract theory
I bring three things into this work:
- First-hand experience of senior professional life, chronic stress, burnout and identity collapse
- Extensive training in somatic, therapeutic and coaching approaches and techniques
- A grounded, steady presence shaped by my own long-term healing journey
I understand the professional world, and I understand what it costs to live disconnected from yourself within it.
You will not be rushed, judged, criticised or compared.
At some point, it becomes important to understand how this work is structured in practice.
This journey is not offered as a set of isolated sessions.
It is a structured sequence of times we spend together, away from the momentum of daily life where I will help you to look more carefully at what is happening beneath the surface.
Most clients initially choose to work together over a period of three to six months, allowing safe space and time for something deeper than short-term relief; a gradual process of understanding, rebalancing, reintegrating and meaningful change.
How the work supports change
A steady path back to yourself
There is no rigid formula to the way our work unfolds., However, over time, certain themes tend to emerge.
Creating space
At the beginning the focus is often on slowing things down.
- Understanding the nature of chronic stress
- Noticing what has been carried for va long time without question
- Allowing the nervous system to begin settling, perhaps for the first time in years.
Our work together may include:
- Learning techniques to help your nervous system relax and settle out of chronic alert so you can think, feel, and choose with greater clarity.
- Understanding and adapting the inner parts that drive patterns and behaviours which no longer serve you well, such as perfectionism, over-responsibility, or emotional withdrawal.
- Reconnecting with your core passions, values, agency and identity to develop your wholesome and meaningful integrity.
- Providing you with a powerful sense of direction that may have been lacking and elusive.
- Ensuring that the rediscovered sense of self is sustainable, embodied and lived, not just understood.
This is a private, confidential and non-judgmental space.
We will pace our time to explore the patterns that emerge, help you to regulate your nervous system, create modified or new beliefs that will better serve you and provide you with a direction of travel that is closely aligned with who you truly are from the inside out.
Throughout the process, there is no pressure to perform, no expectation to have the “right answers”, no requirement to move faster than feels manageable.
My role is not to direct your life or impose solutions.
It is to offer a steady, thoughtful presence, and a way of working together that helps you understand yourself intellectually, and provides you with the tools to provide you with a more healthy living experience in your body, so that you will find a place of greater awareness and integrity.
This work is offered as a structured coaching journey rather than as individual sessions.
Many clients find a three to six month journey works well.
As a guide, programmes covering three to six months typically range from £900 to £2,700.
It is important that we tailor a journey that is right for you and your needs. We will be able to have this conversation at our discovery session.
Is this work right for you?
Empty Suit coaching may be right for you if you are:
- A professional in an executive or leadership role, particularly in education, law and healthcare
- Externally competent but internally struggling
- Curious about the impact of earlier experiences on your present life
- Ready for deeper change, not superficial solutions
- Willing to engage honestly and steadily.
It may not be right for you if you are:
- Seeking immediate productivity or career strategy
- Looking for quick reassurance without inner change
- Currently in an acute mental health crisis requiring clinical care
If you’re unsure, please feel free to bring that uncertainty to a first conversation.
How I work – transformative, somatic trauma-informed coaching
My approach is relational, trauma-informed, and grounded in real senior professional and education-sector experience.
I bring together:
- Somatic trauma-informed coaching
Working with the nervous system to gently unwind chronic stress, anxiety and old survival patterns. - Transformative coaching & parts-based work
Helping you understand, rather than fight, the inner strategies that once kept you safe but now keep you stuck. - Executive and education-sector insight
I understand the cultures, pressures and unspoken expectations of senior professional life, particularly in schools and universities.
This work is not about fixing you.
It’s about restoring wholeness.
You may recognise yourself here – not necessarily in every detail, but in the overall sense of things no longer quite adding up.
You may have been holding this thought for some time.
If so, it may be worth having a conversation, not because you need to act immediately, but because something in you wants to be heard.
A first, gentle step
You don’t have to know where this leads
You can begin with a private, confidential 25-minute discovery conversation.
This is not a commitment.
It’s an opportunity to speak honestly, be listened to, and explore whether this work feels right for you.
(No pressure. Just space to speak honestly.)
Coaching with depth, discretion and respect for the pace of real change.
